We are very grateful for the support of generous individuals, corporations, foundations, and organizations. Without them, we would not be able to provide the hope and healing that children and families struggling with mental health issues require.
A new model of intensive, holistic care for children, youth and their families is now available to our clients thanks to FDC Foundation. With an exceptional pledge of $500,000, FDC Foundation launched the Centre’s Clinician-CYW Collaboration, enabling the hire of two Child and Youth Workers (CYW) who will work closely with our clinicians on identified cases where a child or youth would benefit from more intensive, hands-on support in addition to their regular outpatient treatment. It has long been a wish to offer the powerful combination of practical, community-level skill of a Child and Youth Worker (CYW) with the in-depth, evidence-based knowledge and training of a clinical therapist to our families. With one of our Group Treatment meeting rooms already carrying their name, this latest gift from FDC Foundation further demonstrates their deep commitment to improving the lives of children and youth.
As the daughter of the Centre’s founding Board Chair Michael Syron, Laura and her husband Keith McLaughlin are no strangers to the life-changing impact of effective and timely children’s mental health treatment. In fact, their son experienced it firsthand when he was in need of the Centre’s services. With a desire to ensure children with complex mental helath issues have access to the best possible care, Laura and Keith pledged $100,000 to the Centre’s Institute of Childhood Trauma and Attachment. With their generous support, clinicians from the Centre and partner agencies will receive greatly needed training in trauma assessment and treatment, including how to utilize the CASTERTM, a new trauma screening tool developed by the Institute’s Dr. James Worling.
Children are inadequately assessed for trauma, leading to misdiagnosis, inappropriate treatment and years of suffering. To address this gap, the Institute for Childhood Trauma and Attachment developed The Child and Adolescent Screener for Traumatic Events and Response (CASTER), a trauma screening tool in consultation with trauma experts, clinicians, youth, and parents. This trauma assessment tool pulls for trauma exposures, trauma symptoms and family stability indicators. Unique to the CASTER is the incorporation of experiences of discrimination and oppression -questions related to experiences based on gender or sexual orientation, race, skin colour, place of birth, neighbourhood, etc. With a generous donation of $50,000 from RBC Foundation, we will systematically screen youth aged 15-18 and their families referred for outpatient services in the Community Clinic. Youth who are traumatized will receive appropriate diagnosis and treatment. RBC Foundation’s funding will support the delivery of the tool to all families, the roll up of the data and treatment services for up to 31 youth and 45 allies. We are grateful to the RBC Foundation for this impactful gift.
Moved by the immense need for children’s mental health services, George Hull Centre Board member and Trustee Chetan Baweja got to work in 2020 and launched an annual campaign amongst his peers in commercial real estate. In its first year, “Chetan’s Campaign”, as it was affectionately dubbed by the Centre, raised $35,250. Four years later, Chetan’s 2023 campaign raised an incredible $130,500 from 47 firms and individuals, including $10,000 donations from Centrecorp, CMLS Financial, and Colliers, and a fantastic $55,000 donation from Menkes 2023 Charity Golf Classic!
We are so grateful to the individuals, foundations, and corporations that make donations to the George Hull Centre for Children and Families from April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2024.
