Description

This video illustrates a DDP session with a mother and son who are biologically related. Sophia was only 17 years old when she gave birth to Jackson and was alone and overwhelmed. She relied on alcohol and drugs to cope and that meant that Jackson often experienced neglect and abuse in those first 5 years of his life as well as an apprehension to out-of-home care. He could not rely on his mother and this mis-trust has generalized to all relationships. This makes it so difficult for his mother to comfort and influence him now years later when she is doing well and is in a position to meet his needs. Jackson continues to engage in risky behaviour and the family have made the decision to place him in an in-patient treatment program. In this session Jackson is angry and confused why after working so hard on his relationship with his mother she has “sent him away”. This session relies on the building of trust in the relationship Jackson has been forming with his mother and with the therapist over a period of time. The therapist helps make new meaning of this decision while preserving connection and building the openness to take the risk to connect with staff and peers in the treatment program.
