Watch Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy Skill: Talking for a Client
This video clip is part of the Dyad First Session video. Buy it individually or all therapy sessions and expert commentary as a package.
Watch these videos in order to see Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy skills in practice. The videos have markers that point out different aspects of PACE and A/R dialogue like curiosity, empathy, playfulness, acceptance, “talking for,” storytelling, repair, joint intent and more. The above video shows a sample of “talking for” a client. The first dyadic session is an example of creating enough emotional safety for Sophia and Jackson to move away from their mutually defensive pattern of responding and find hope that their relationship can be different. The therapist helps Sophia tolerate and have empathy for Jackson’s anger and helps Jackson recognize that his mother wants to be there for him in ways that she wasn’t able in his early years. We leave the session with joint intent to build a better connection between them. The second dyadic session represents work further in the relationship. In this tape Jackson has recently been admitted to a residential program and is angry and scared. He challenges his mother about her decision to send him to treatment and we all work to make sense of that decision.
Also available for purchase are conversations between Dr. Jon Baylin and Dr. Sian Phillips, where they discuss what might be happening neurobiologically for parent, child and therapist and how DDP interventions create the safety needed to reorient towards safety signals.
This package includes access to all five videos: Dyad First Session, Dyad First Session - Discussion, Dyad Residential Placement, Dyad Residential Placement - Discussion, and Parent Sessions.
