Description
In this video you will see the first parent session with Sophia who has come to therapy because she is so worried about her 16 year old son Jackson. Sophia gave birth to her son when she was 17 years of age and struggling with loss and addictions. This made it very difficult for her to attend to Jackson’s needs and he experienced physical and emotional neglect, physical and verbal abuse and relationship dynamics where his needs were not recognized or responded to with attunement. Jackson was taken into care at 5 years of age and Sophia worked hard to get well and be a good parent to him. Jackson was returned to her care. She later met and married Cody and has a healthy relationship with him. They have a son Brandon who is 9 years younger than Jackson. Sophia is terrified that Jackson will go to jail or be harmed because of the risky behaviour he is engaging in. Perhaps not surprisingly over the years, Jackson has had multiple diagnoses but only recently has someone wondered about trauma.
Sophia has a great deal of shame about her inability to meet Jackson’s needs. She persists in trying to influence him but he typically rejects her. In the second session on this video you will see how DDP helps integrate that shame to prepare her for dyadic work.
